Safer Space Guidelines

At REFRACT, we aim to create artistic, creative, and inclusive spaces where people can express themselves more freely, explore identity, and experience community without fear of judgment or exclusion.

We recognize that no space can be completely safe for everyone at all times. That is why we actively work toward creating safer spaces — through care, clear boundaries, accountability, and respect for one another’s experiences and needs.

These guidelines apply to everyone participating in REFRACT’s events, exhibitions, workshops, digital spaces, and collaborations.

We Expect Everyone To:

  • treat others with respect, curiosity, and basic care

  • respect people’s identities, pronouns, bodies, and boundaries

  • practice active consent — physically, socially, and emotionally

  • contribute to an inclusive environment, especially toward people who are new to the community or belong to minorities

  • show consideration for neurodivergent, disabled, and trauma-affected individuals

  • listen when someone expresses discomfort or sets boundaries

  • remain aware of how their own behavior affects others around them

This Will Not Be Accepted:

  • harassment, discrimination, or hateful speech

  • bullying, social exclusion, or intentional humiliation of others

  • transphobia, homophobia, biphobia, racism, ableism, or other discriminatory behavior

  • intentional misgendering or disrespectful treatment of identity

  • unwanted sexual attention or boundary-crossing behavior

  • filming, photographing, or sharing content in ways that violate others’ boundaries or privacy

  • aggressive, threatening, or manipulative behavior

  • substance use that makes others feel unsafe or negatively impacts the community

Photography and Documentation

Some events, exhibitions, and performances may involve photography or filming for documentation, promotional purposes, or artistic use.

We encourage everyone to show care and consideration when photographing or filming others. Please avoid close-up shots or identifiable sharing without clear consent, especially in situations that may feel vulnerable, intimate, or private.

If you do not wish to be photographed or filmed, we ask that this is respected as far as practically possible.

About Art, Nudity, and Sexuality

REFRACT is an artistic and queer space. Some events or exhibitions may include nudity, sexuality, or themes that may not be suitable for all age groups.

Nudity and bodily expression are not considered inherently pornographic within our context. REFRACT does not allow pornographic films or explicitly pornographic content, and our curators or jury assess the boundaries between artistic expression and explicit sexual material.

At the same time, we wish to safeguard children’s wellbeing and support guardians in making informed choices. For events containing more mature themes, we may therefore use recommended age guidance or suggest that children attend together with a trusted adult.

This is not because queerness is harmful to children, but because we believe art, bodies, and sexuality should be approached responsibly and with age awareness.

About Kink and Alternative Expressions

REFRACT recognizes kinky people and alternative forms of expression as part of queer diversity.

Kink communities and kinky individuals often experience stigma — including within queer spaces themselves. We therefore aim to approach such expressions with respect rather than shame or condemnation, as long as they take place within the framework of consent, safety, and consideration for context and audience.

Conflict and Boundaries

If someone experiences discomfort, boundary violations, or feels unsafe, we encourage them to contact the organizer or representatives from REFRACT.

At present, such matters are handled by the board or responsible organizers. We will approach all concerns with respect, discretion, and a commitment to finding responsible solutions.

REFRACT reserves the right to intervene in cases of behavior that violates these guidelines, including asking individuals to leave events or excluding participants in cases of serious or repeated violations.

Finally

REFRACT is about art, community, curiosity, and human diversity.

We believe safer spaces are not created through perfection, but through a willingness to listen, learn, take responsibility, and meet one another with respect.
