Queer and Trans-Inclusive Art and Culture
REFRACT is a space where queer lives, bodies, and identities are not merely included, but form the foundation of our work. We operate with an understanding of gender as self-defined and fluid, and actively work to ensure that trans, non-binary, and gender-creative voices are represented at every level — from the board and jury to exhibiting artists.
Diversity and Accessibility
We work to break down barriers, whether physical, financial, or social. This includes striving for accessible venues, using inclusive language, and making art available to a broad audience regardless of background or ability.
Consent-Based and Respectful Collaboration
Artistic integrity is at the core of our projects. We practice clear communication and formal agreements. We respect artists’ boundaries regarding presentation, documentation, and contextualization of their work, ensuring that all parties feel ownership of the process.
Anti-Discrimination
REFRACT has zero tolerance for racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, sexism, or any other form of discriminatory behavior. We actively work to recognize our own blind spots and maintain clear procedures for addressing and responding to harmful incidents.
Creative Freedom and Artistic Exploration
We aim to be a safe haven for experimentation. This means supporting projects that dare to fail, challenge commercial expectations, and explore new aesthetic and conceptual paths beyond the conventions of the established art world.
Safer Spaces
While no space can ever be 100% safe for everyone, we are committed to creating safer spaces. We do this through clear behavioral guidelines (Code of Conduct), active care for our collaborators and artists, and by creating environments where people can share experiences without fear of judgment.
Critical Reflection on Power Structures and Representation
As a newly established platform, we are aware of the responsibility that comes with creating space within the art world. We continuously reflect on who is given visibility and whose voices are being heard, with the goal of challenging established power structures and unequal representation.
For us, this includes maintaining an open dialogue about privilege and fostering a willingness to listen, learn, and evolve alongside the needs of the queer arts community.
Openness, Collaboration, and Responsible Organization
REFRACT aims to be a transparent and accountable organization. We practice openness regarding decision-making processes and finances, and seek collaborators who share our ethical values. We take responsibility for our operations and strive for sustainable management of both human and financial resources.
